Is pilates and yoga good for young ballet dancers who want to grow taller AND have scoliosis?
ive heard its really good for:
Ballet dancers (pilates was made for them)
scoliosis (yoga helps with scoliosis?)?
being taller (i heard yoga and pilates helps with increasing height if you do it young)
is this all true? it seems too good to be true?!
I don’t know about scoliosis or becoming taller, but yoga and especially pilates are great for ballet. Many studios and top companies have pilates classes (and I believe ABT and SFB both have pilates workout dvds available). It is a great way to strengthen your core. I would also look in to "floor barre" workouts, basically traditional ballet barre exercises reformatted for the floor (and they become even harder if you can believe that!) Hope this helped.

Pilates and yoga may help if the exercises are tailored to the individual who has the scoliosis. They may be counterproductive if the exercises are wrong. The instructor needs to know exactly what (s)he is doing. An examination by a healthcare professional who understands scoliosis is advisable, since my scoliosis is not the same configuration as most other people’s and one can’t apply the same exercises to everybody.
Scoliosis inevitably reduces height, since the spine loses length when it twists out of normal alignment. The worse the scoliosis, the more height reduction. Thus reversing scoliotic curves may restore height to the degree of reversal. General yoga or Pilates exercises are probably not going to accomplish this.
You might investigate a physical therapy exercise treatment for scoliosis called the Schroth method (search on yahoo). This has a decades-long history of success in Germany and has recently been introduced to the US.
