Get dizzy when trying to do yoga – in 2nd trimester…?

Posted on October 27th, 2009 by admin in beginners yoga poses | 5 Comments »

I am 14 weeks pregnant and I just starting the beginner’s yoga moves on the Wii fit. I’m in pretty good shape but almost all of the poses make my head start spinning like I’m about to pass out. Focusing on my breathing just seems to make things worse. Having my hands out to the side and especially above my head, as part of the various poses, result in tingling and then loss of feeling in my hands and fingers and my arms ache from the blood loss. What is going on? I’m not dehydrated – I make sure I drink plenty of water and eat healthy, especially being pregnant. I can’t believe this is just normal…

Have you asked your doctor or midwife about the advisability of doing these exercises. This is not the place for accurate advice. Stop using the WiiFit until you have spoken to your doctor.

What pilates/yoga equipment do I need to practice at home? Any suggestions?

Posted on October 25th, 2009 by admin in yoga pilates | 2 Comments »

I want to do pilates to tone and sculpt my body. The two kits I am looking at both have different equipment. Which should I choose?

1-Karen Voight Body Sculpting System
* yoga mat
* 2 Vids and booklets
* two genie balls 5 lbs weights
* 65 cm stability ball

Pilates kit
* 3 flat and 3 circular bands for stretching
* 65 cm stability ball
* yoga strap – 8 ft
* yoga brick ( whats this for?)
* two hand grips
* Yoga mat
* Yoga chart

I’m a beginner so I’m not sure what equipment I will need. I know I definiately want the stability ball.

From personal experience, all you really need is a mat, a book and/or DVDs to practice at home. And if you’re not that flexible, you should get a yoga strap and yoga bricks.

So, as far as the equipment above, they are more catered to (but not limited to) those specific programs or programs like it.

It also, just boils down to how much money you’re willing to spend. Amazon.com has good prices on yoga DVDs, books and equipment/kits and you can get free shipping on items over $24.

I also know from personal experience that a stability ball is a good piece of equipment to have, but of course, not necessary to have a successful yoga practice.

Have fun!

We want to open a yoga studio in California. What are the benefits of filing sole proprietorship versus LLC?

Posted on October 25th, 2009 by admin in benefits of yoga | 3 Comments »

The yoga studio is a very small one. We don’t want to incur too many unnecessary costs, like the $800 that Cali requires from LLCs.

The biggest advantage of an LLC is that your liability is protected, the taxation would be just like a sole propietorship with a 1040C. If someone decides to sue and you are a sole propietor you will answer with your own assets and the LLC offers you that protection

If you are an LLC you wont. You can open a cheap LLC in the state of Delaware that offers you better asset protection and make it operate in the state of California.

Good yoga book for beginners?

I’m thinking about starting yoga. I need a good book about it and stretches. Any recommendations?

Nothing beats a live teacher, but if that’s not possible for you, here’s a few titles I’ve seen and thought were good quality instruction:

"Sivananda Beginner’s Guide to Yoga" (Amazon, new: $14.36; used: $9.59 http://www.amazon.com/Sivananda-Beginner…

"B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health"
(Amazon, new hardcover $24.00 http://www.amazon.com/B-K-S-Iyengar-Yoga…

"Astanga Yoga" (Amazon, new: $20.90; used: $15.19 http://www.amazon.com/Astanga-Yoga-Jean-Hall/dp/0754810747/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220369220&sr=1-2)

Good luck.

why do some yoga instructors show ‘downward facing dog’ pose as?

Posted on October 25th, 2009 by admin in beginners yoga poses | 2 Comments »

both feet planted on the ground and others with just the toes? I find it easier with the toes and the full on feet tend to make the skin around my ankle wrinkle-which i heard was wrong probably due to flexibility.

is the toes one just for beginners?
thank you in advance!

Well what you want to do is have your feet back enough so that when you push back your ankles you can feel a stretch in your calf. If you can easily get your ankles on the ground then you need to bring your feet back more so that you feel the stretch.

There is no beginner and advanced downward dog, only how you push yourself and if you do it ‘right’ so to speak.

Wish you luck

Can you do yoga or pilates at home?

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 by admin in yoga pilates | 2 Comments »

I really want to start either yoga or pilates and I’m unable to go to a class to scheduling conflicts, but I’m willing to try it at home. Is there anywas I can still do this in the comfort of my own house?

Also, is either one better than the other in terms of health and losing fat?

If you have cable there are yoga/pilates on video on demand. If not you can get some DVD’s from the library or store. I like pilates better as it’s more intense muscularly.

What benefits do you get from doing Yoga?

Does anyone know if YOGA is good for the lower back?

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 by admin in yoga for beginners | 2 Comments »

I can’t do Pilates exercises since they hurt my back. Those are much too strenuous. I don’t have any problem with doing aerobics. I was wondering if Yoga would help? I have had back surgery due to a herniated disk and I was considering buying a beginner yoga video but don’t know if I should bother. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Yoga has been a god-send for my lower back. Definitely give it a try. But I would strongly suggest starting with classes so that your instructor can help you get properly aligned in positions. Also, the instructor will be able to suggest modifications of poses that might put too much strain on your back at this point. But over time, yoga will definitely strengthen your back. Have fun!

how do i bend my knees to do the child pose in yoga?

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 by admin in beginners yoga poses | 3 Comments »

okay, i am a guy trying out yoga through a few internet instructional guides, and one "beginner" stretch is called the child pose which requires you to sit on your heels. is there some type of training i should do to be able to bend my knees that far? is this stretch even possible for males?
the pose itself is easy, but i am unable to bend my knees all the way to make my buttocks rest on my heels. it would be best to add that my physical build is very skinny/boney, my knees feel like they are resisting when i try to bend them that far.

You mean this?

I don’t see how that’s hard, I can do it, actually I’m surprised someone wouldn’t be able to do it.
